Thomas Ligon of a lineage that reaches back to William the Conqueror was baptized 11Jan1623 in Warwickshire, England. He came adventuring to VA when his kinsman, Sir William Berkeley, was appointed Governor there in 1641. With that valuable connection, and by hard work, Ligon raeched powerful positions in the upper James River settlements. He secured an appointment as official Surveyor there, which brought in an income and which was useful to his own program of land acquistion. He served as a justice in his county courts, and he represented his community in the house of Burgesses. He also rose to the high rank of Colonel in his militia, marking his leadership in the fierce frountier fighting.
