Notes

The Carter Family records are vague on this oldest son of "Secretary" John Carter. Carlton's book "A genealogy of the known descendants of Robert Carter of Corotoman (V> Ref. 929.2755), says he was last recorded as a very young child in 1728 (in "King" Carter will) and never mentioned again. I looked up Robert "King" Carter's will and found only passing reference to " John, the son of my son John." All other references to his other grandchildren were phrased differently as "my grandson ****", or to "my son ***, or the legitimate issue of his body." Was this John Carter (perhaps the father of our John Carter) a bastard son of the secretary of the Virginia colony? I am theorizing that if this is so, that he married Mary, in Williamsburg (near his fathers residence as Secretary of the Colony) , and that he wound up on Carter's mountain in Albemarle County (which his father John Carter obtained in 1730) sometime before his brother Edward inherited it in 1742. That he had two sons John and Charles, and a daughter, Elizabeth. I am going to continue trying to gather information based on this theory. Mourning Bond was raised on the Hardware River, about 5 miles from Carter's mountain. A son of this John Carter, of the same name, is my best bet. This is especially true considering the newspaper article written by a friend of his son Charles CarterIII claiming that Charles was a descendent of Robert "King" Carter.

I found that Mourning Bond applied for a widows pension in 1857 from Talladega Co, AL. She didn't supply any information about her Husband, John's ancestry. Since most of the other applications did contain such information I think this is suspicious.

I will try to get Photostats of this application from the National Archives. I did and it didn't help.

There is a record for a John Carter of Williamsburg (d. 1792) married to Jane Michell (d1791) daughter of Thomas Michell who in 1770 was the collector of Customs at the port of Hampton, VA. (Marriages of Some Virginia Residents, 1607-1800, files of Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, 51 Park Ave., Naugatuck, CN)

In the Bruton and Middlesex Parish records there is a record of a son John born to John and Mary Carter in James City Co, VA on 29Sep1741. There is also a record of a son James born to John Carter(merchant) and his wife Jane Mitchell on 23Dec1760 and baptized 16Jun1761. And also a record of a daughter Anne born to John and Anne Carter on 29May1763 and baptized 8Jun1763. According to the Bruton Parish records there was a daughter Elizabeth born to John and Mary Carter in 1743.

There is a record of John Carter (jailor) involved in a lawsuit 15Feb1741 in James City Co, VA.

"I have a John Carter (a cabinet maker) m. a Mary Smith on 24 May or 25 May 1773 in Isle of Wight Co, VA per Everton CD Rom 229. That's all I have on them." He is MyronS2800@@aol.com
