Notes

William Chandler was born ca 1729-30 in St, Margaret's Parish, Caroline Co., VA, and died 1795 in Stokes Co., NC. He was the oldest son of Joseph and Sarah Chandler. The family moved to Goochland County, VA on the South Side of the James River about 1733. William age 21 appears with his father Joseph and younger brothers Joel and John in the Tithe List for St. James Southam Parish in 1746. William moved to Lunenburg County with the family ca 1747 and was on the County Tithe List of 1750 and 51. In about 1752 he married Delisha Cox, daughter of neighbor John Cox of Lunenburg and widow of James Dobbins who died in 1751. In 1757 William and Delisha began a series of land transactions in which she was actively involved. They aquired (mostly by patent) and sold land in Lunenburg Co. around Juniper and Sneed Creeks. Some of the Sneed Creek land was sold to jounger brother Joseph. However, William and Delisha lived on his father's property and ossupied a designed portion as their homesteadon the Meherrin River. William inherited his homestead upon the death of his father Joseph in 1764. In 1778 or 1779 William and (possibly all of) the children moved to Surry Co., NC and lived in that part which became Stokes Co., in 1789. William died in 1795 leaving a brief will.

Notes

She was only 2 when her father died and 16 when her Grandmother Wheeler died. Her Grandmother split her half of the $8000 Wheeler estate between Fannie and her brother Ben. This might have been out of concern for the two fatherless children. Her Will was changed just six days before she died. It caused a lawsuit between Edwin Abbott and the Wheeler estate. He was said to have been very bad tempered and to have dominated his wife and ultimately alienated his son and namesake, who left and didn't return even to inherit his estate.

She was very close to her Aunt, Nancy Clapp Wheeler, who lived with her mother, Rebecca Simpson, after her husband died.

I found both her marriage license and divorce papers in Mother's old papers. In the divorce papers from her lawyer he said, "Next time find a good Texan, a business man who knows not only how to make money, but how to save money. The professional fellows, such as Doctors, Professors, and Lawyers, who have been highly trained along theoretical lines some times make mighty poor husbands."

Died of Parkinson's disease. She was very kind to her niece, Fannie Simpson. According to Ethel Harris, she supported Fannie and her sister Rebecca at least while Fannie was in school from Fall 1928 to graduation in 1932. She offered Fannie a trip to Europe if she wouldn't marry Bill Carter.
