Dear Hank, I received your reply to my e-mail and I appreciated it very much. Yes, I am quite familiar with William LaFayette Whitlock since he was my great-grandmother's brother. He married Lucinda Bridges October 7, 1847, died in 1892 and is buried in Gadsden, Al.

Although some records show that John Bethel Kent married Francis Marion's sister, it is apparent from looking at the dates that this is extremely unlikely since she died in 1751 and he probably was not born until after that time. As you are probably aware there are several Elizabeths in the two suceeding generations, but all of them I have been able to check so far married someone else. It is possible that the husband of one of these died and that she then married John Bethel Kent, but I have found no evidence of this. I have several times attempted to draw up a chart of their families trying to show family relatioships, but with the information that is available, it is difficult to do. Also, they all named their children the same names, so it is hard to tell what generation it is with which you are dealing. I think that your trying to find someone either a niece or possibly a great-niece of Francis Marion is a good idea. I do believe that John Bethel Kent married a Marion, but it has been a long chase trying to find her.

I don't have much information on either John Kent's or Lott Whitlock's forbears, only info on their descendents. I know that John Kent's parents were named Mark and Martha, and I think her maiden name was Bankhead, but that is about the extent of my knowledge.

Right now, I am looking for firm documentation on Carlton Woolf being the son of Henry Woolf, and I can find all sorts of indications that this is true, but so far, nothing absolutely firm. If you have anything on this, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.

I am originally from Piedmont, Alabama and have lived in Smyrna, Georgia for over 40 years now. Where do you live and what relation are you to William LaFayette Whitlock?

Hello. Saw the display on Gendex. Interesting since I'm related to the Kent line. In family bible have: Mark Kent born Kent County England date unknown. Died in Maryland 1774. Married Martha Bankhead. Son John Bethel Kent born 1790-1800. John Bethel married Elizabeth Marion. John Bethel died in Lincoln Co. South Carolina ca 1840-1850. John and Elizabeth had son William D. Kent b. 1805 in S.Carolina m. Cinthia b. 1812 S.Carolina. William died 1871 in Ripley Co. Missouri, Cinthia died 1888 in Ripley Co. MO both buried in Poplar Bluff Cemetary. They had 9 children of which I have all names dates etc. Mark Kent was my ggggggrandfather. Curious why your info does not match mine. Could Elizabeth Kent be William D.s' sister that we didn't know about? Thanks Ann.

records show his children born in 1770's

and 1780's) Mark Kent b. before 1755. Martha Bankhead b. before 1755

Mark and Martha Kent with children moved to Union Co. South Carolina around 1790. Mark died in Union Co. S.C. 1791. Martha Bankhead Kent died in Union Co. S.C. 1803. Estate settlements of Mark and Martha Bankhead Kent (1803) and of William Kent,their son (1841) both list 3 sons and 5 daughters for Mark and Martha. So does the Union Co. census. Mark and Martha had 375 acres,personal property, animals(doc-summary of estate settlement)

Bankheads in Union Co. S.C. by 1790 and involved in the estate settlement of Mark and Martha Bankhead Kent. Children of Mark and Martha: John Bethel b. 1770 William Samuel b. 1774 Elizabeth b. 1775 in Maryland Margeret (Peggy) b. 1780 Martha (Patsy) b. 1787 in N.C. Mary (Polly) b. 1788 in N.C. William Samuel never married. Died in Union Co. S.C. in 1841. (Antioch Baptist Church minutes Apr.2, 1841) left all of estate to brothers and sisters. Elizabeth Kent m. John G. John Kent - b. 1770 died Lincoln Co. N.C. 1840-1850. 1800 census had wife, 3 sons and one daughter 1810 census had 3 sons, one daughter and NO wife. (deceased) children: Greenville B. b. ? William b. 1794 in S.C. Elizabeth b. 1795 in S.C. William D. b. 1804 in S.C. ***BIBLE records and census records substantiate that Elizabeth Kent Whitlock was the daughter of John Kent. Greenville was the son of John Kent. Elizabeth Kent Whitlock's father, Lott Whitlock was the adminstrator of Greenville's estate. Assumption is the wife of John Kent, Elizabeth died at the birth of William D.

From the county records, census records, Bible & church records and the Gen. Soc.Pub.-- 1786 John Kent married Elizabeth Marion Copied from the James Payne Savage Family Bible. James Savage's wife is Sarah Whitlock, granddaughter of John Kent. *****The age of Francis Marion's mother and the age of Elizabeth Kent Whitlock make it unlikely that Elizabeth is the sister of Francis Marion. I believe that her maiden name was Davis as I can prove Davis' lived on adjoining property and Martha B.Kent bought land from the Davis'. When John Kent's son died, Levi David and Aron David appraised the goods and chattels for the estate. For many other reasons I believe the D. in William D is for Davis-his mother's maiden name.

I have records of William D. Kent son of John Kent including his birth, death, marriage, children, grandchildren, etc.

Please look this over, and if there is anything else I can do let me know. I am still working on proving that my theory on the Davis not Marion is right. If I ever verify it I will let you know. In the meantime, the Marion family will continue to believe that John married a Marion! Ann
