I had a telephone conversation with Buddy Soland about 8 or 10 years ago, trying to determine if there was a relationship. There appears to be although I have not been able to verify most of what he told me. He said that the Solands originated in Switzerland (descendants of a Hans Soland who lived in Aargau in the 1560s); moved to Alsace Lorraine and from there three brothers and one sister came to the U.S. via New Orleans. His grandfather, Fred Michael Soland was in New Orleans by 1865, and some of the family was still there, including some with the surnames Blessing and Desmond.
Two brothers and a sister, whom he identified as Anthony William, Henry, and Mabel, went north on a Mississippi riverboat captained by H. Milton Harold.(My grandfather was William, and this fits what we know of him,including the sister; brother Henry is news to me, however.) Buddy said that Henry went on to Canada. He also said he had an aunt who knew much more than he and would see if she could give me more information, but I have not heard from her.
I do not know Buddy's parents' names and would appreciate any information you can send me. I do have quite a bit of information on William's descendants which may or may not be of interest to you. If it is, I'll be happy to share.
