He came to America by accident. He was Mate on a small English ship that sent a ground in the Potomac River in 1656. By the time the ship was repaired, he had decided to marry and settle in Verginia. He started with little money. Within 20 years he owned more that 5,000 acres, including the land that later became Mount Vernon.

Hello, I found a listing of your Whitlock's on the Rootsweb Surname list and found the information on the Whitlock's quite impressive. I am a descendant of Greenville B. Whitlock's, his daughter Texana (Texie) was my g-g-grandmother. I have not found much information out there on Greenville's father and the information I have recently received comes from the Whitlock Family Association newsletter that I sent off for. There other only area I have discovered is through the Genforum.

Both places, I have experienced a little confusion like on the WFA they have Lott's wife listed as Elizabeth Marion (Kent) Runnels and at Genforum I see her as Elizabeth Kent. There never seems to be matching dates on either also. But I found your listing to be very informative and was wondering how you came of your information.

I have a genealogy webpage that I am in the process of updating and I will be adding more Whitlock's with in this week. My sources for my information come from the research room of Quachita Baptist University where a lookup found my g-g-grandmother's marriage records with Greenville as her father. I have recently returned from a research trip to Texas where I got to visit Texie's gravesite and found some other records but none listing Greenville on up. I do plan on returning to Northern Arkansas at the end of September to do more research on Greenville.
