Notes
"the Statesman & Orator". He had little education but he read law and was
admitted to the bar in 1797 and practiced in Lexington, KY. He began his
political career in 1801 as a member of the KY constitutional convention.
From 1806 to 1807 and again from 1809 to 1811 he filled unexpired seats
in the U. S. Senate. He was under 30 years old (the legal age according to
the constitution) when first chosen for this. He entered the House in 1811
and became Speaker on the first day of the session. He argued in favor of
the War of 1812 so strongly that it was called "Mr. Clay's War". He was
considered chief of the "Hawks". He was reelected to the House and
Speakership five more times. He was one of the commissioners chosen to
make peace and signed the treaty of Ghent. He supported the Missouri
Compromise in 1820 (slavery vs anti slavery states), and the Compromise
of 1850. He ran for President in 1824, 1832, and 1844. He made very
good money from his law practice. His home Ashland in Lexington was a
show place. His oldest son, Theodore, was confined to a mental institution,
his six daughters all died when young, and his brilliant son, Henry, was killed
in the Mexican War.
