Notes

Check the Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library in Lancaster, and the ruins of Corotoman in Weams. I did and the genealogists at the Christ Church Carter center though my assumptions about John Carter were reasonable.

Christ Church is a good source of information on "King" Carter and his children. Nearby, there is a very old man named Carter Welford who still lives in a house called Sabine Hall given to his ancester, Landon Carter, by Landon's father, King Carter, near Corotoman. When Corotoman burned the saved furniture went into Carter Welford's house. The house and all of the furniture, collected since the house was built, has never left the family. He gave me a tour of it all once. Many of the pictures that you have seen in books on the Carter family were made from paintings on his walls. He was a chemist with Dupont until he retired. He mostly only knows his own line of the family but he knows that completely.

The Carters and the Lees, at least during the life of King Carter, had a family feud going. It dissipated somewhat as the generations went by, but there was no love lost during that era. Have to look it up, but a Lee mansion burned to the ground within days of the fire at Corotoman. There is some suggestion that it was not coincidental. I can't remember if I read it in Nagel's Lees of VA or Ivor Hume's Here Lies VA. I just tried to find it Lees with no luck, but it does talk about the burning of Machodoc (Lee ancestral home), and blames vengeful felons, but I think Corotoman burned in 1735. BTW - Shirley is another plantation still extant and owned by relatives. Yours, presumably. Mine, too, but more distantly.
